Kybella

Kybella is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment designed to address stubborn pockets of fat, particularly submental fullness, commonly known as a double chin.

The key ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. During the treatment, Kybella is injected into stubborn pockets of fat, where it works to destroy fat cells. The body then naturally processes and eliminates these cells over time, leading to a more contoured and defined area.

Kybella is an effective and FDA-approved solution for reducing unwanted fat, providing a non-invasive alternative to surgical procedures. The treatment is customized to individual needs, and the number of sessions required can vary based on the amount of fat present. While temporary swelling, bruising, or numbness may occur, these side effects typically subside over a few days.

Some of our favorite treatment areas include: submental fullness (double chin), “bra fat” in the front and back, jowl reduction, and belly pouches.

Kybella FAQs

  • Kybella works by destroying fat cells in the treated area. Deoxycholic acid breaks down the fat cell membranes, causing the cells to collapse and be absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system over time. The result is a reduction in fat and a more defined jawline.

  • The number of treatments depends on your specific needs and goals. Most people require 2 to 4 sessions, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. Some patients see visible improvements after just one treatment, but for optimal results, multiple sessions are often needed.

  • Yes, Kybella is FDA-approved and considered safe when administered by a trained professional. As with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects, but serious complications are rare.

  • The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, redness, and pain at the injection site. Some people may experience numbness or a feeling of tightness under the chin. These side effects are generally temporary and subside within a few days to weeks.

  • Kybella provides permanent results as the fat cells destroyed by the treatment are gone for good. However, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as new fat can accumulate in the area if you gain significant weight.

  • Most patients report mild discomfort during the injections. The numbing cream helps alleviate some of the pain, and the sensation during the procedure is usually tolerable. Some people may experience more soreness or a burning feeling immediately after the treatment.

  • Results start to appear about 4 to 6 weeks after the first treatment. The full effect may take several months to become visible, as the body gradually eliminates the destroyed fat cells.

  • Ideal candidates are adults with moderate to mild submental fat who are in good overall health and looking for a non-surgical option to contour their chin area. If you have a history of severe allergies or certain medical conditions, you should discuss this with your provider before scheduling the treatment.

  • Currently, Kybella is only FDA-approved for use under the chin (submental area). However, it may sometimes be used off-label in other areas with excess fat, with careful consideration. Common areas include, small abdominal pockets, bra fat, and inner thigh fat.

Kybella Pre & Post Care

Pre Treatment Instructions

  • You may not be treated if you are pregnant or nursing, have difficulty swallowing, nerve injury or weakness in the lower face, or an infection in the area.

  • Inform your medical provider if you are on blood thinners, or have had procedures or surgery of your lower face or neck.

  • Avoid aspirin for 10 days, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), other non-steroidal medications (Aleve) and Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, and fish oil supplements for 5 days prior to the procedure, because these medications will make you more likely to bruise. If you have been prescribed one of these medications, ask your doctor before you stop taking it.

  • Anticipate several days of fullness to the treatment area - please plan accordingly for work and social engagements.

Post Treatment Instructions

  • After your treatment, you should expect swelling and redness. You may also experience bruising, pain, numbness, and induration. This will normally last less than 5 days, and for some patients may last up to 14 days.

  • You may elect to ice the area post treatment but must do so very carefully. Use an ice pack with the fabric side against the skin, or wrap a soft plastic ice pack in a thin towel. Apply the ice pack 15 minutes on, and 15 minutes off. Icing too vigorously can cause frostbite and scarring.

  • Do not participate in strenuous activity for 3 days following treatment

  • Sleep with your head elevated on a couple pillows for a few days while healing.

  • Do not scratch, pick or traumatize the area in any way. Do not massage or manipulate the injection site.

  • You may apply your normal skin care regimen and sunscreen normally.

  • Call the office if you have any difficulty swallowing, crusting or scabbing, asymmetry of your smile or any other unusual symptoms.
